Inspired by the rich heritage of the Walmer Castle site and the beautiful April sunshine, Outdoor Studios artists Amanda Thesiger and Sara Trillo guided English Heritage Members through activities including creating natural inks from foraged items and exploring secret communications – focusing on the Ogham runic code.
Ogham is an ancient Irish runic script with each letter form having a tree or plant association. Participants were given copies of the Ogham code and then made messages by pressing found materials into clay and printing from them.
The natural palette found at the site, such as the soil – and chalk pieces from the Glen, were used to process two inks, which were then used to make drawings of foraged natural objects.
