Artist Martin Brockman led 8 members of the Sittingbourne and Swale Young Carers group, aged 10-14 years, in creating bird sculptures in the panoramic setting of Milton Creek Country Park, Sittingbourne, on a sunny August day.
The young people used off cuts and recycled timbers to make individual sculptures of birds, using saws, battery drills and wooden pegs to attach the different shaped woods together to create their pieces. In the afternoon session they explored colours in the landscape and decorated their sculptures, whilst learning about the native avian population.
The sun shone and the group also visited the “Water Land” sculptures Martin created and Outdoor Studios created installed in the park last year. With thanks to the Imago Charity and Kent Community Foundation for supporting this workshop, and Milton Creek Country Park for the venue .
Feedback from participants and group leaders included the following:
“ I didn’t expect to be using tools, I really liked how to do it.”
“Today was really fun cos I learned about owls and everything, thank you so much”
“ It’s great to see the children using tools, it’s like when I was young we would go in our parents shed and make things , they don’t get that chance so much nowadays.”
