As part of a series of National Tree Week activities at Faversham Recreation Ground, artist Andy Evans led a two day. drop in community leaf dressing workshop exploring the history of the park and its visitors.

Very early in Andy’s career, he took on what was meant to be a summer holiday job, which unexpectedly led to 2 years working under Murray Arbeid, one of London’s last Couture House fashion designers. A great skill of the couturiers was to look to the past to then look forward. During National Tree Week Andy picked up these threads, working with users of the Recreation Ground to make life size 2D art pieces from natural materials, reflecting on the lives of Faversham’s park users of the past.

All ages of park users stopped to look at the art works, and find out more about the historic photos the leaf art was based on. For many it opened up conversations about their own and also their parents’ memories of the park over the years. Children taking part commented on what a special day it had become for them, sharing in the creation of the art work, and how they looked forward to seeing it on the ‘Friends of Faversham Recreation Ground’ Facebook page so they could show the creative work they’d done to friends and relatives.
