As part of Faversham Heritage Festival weekend, artist Andy Evans was commissioned to create two temporary artworks in Faversham Recreation Ground.

The artworks were designed to reflect the history of the former drinking fountain erected in the Rec in 1888 and the First World War tank which was located in the northwest corner of the Rec in 1919, donated to the town in recognition of funds raised during the war.

The fountain comprised a granite base surmounted by a statue of a robed lady in the act of pouring water from an amphora. Unfortunately the sculpture was damaged in 1950 and removed so today only the granite plinth remains.  The tank was sold for scrap in 1937.

The public were encouraged to participate and the activity attracted budding artists of all ages, prompting memories and new curiosity about the history of the park.

Andy really brought history and heritage to life and through his art engaged with many park users.” Activity Coordinator, Faversham Recreation Ground
